NonToxic Checker rates 120 consumer brands across personal care, cleaning, cookware, candles, and mattresses. We publish a verdict only when we can cite at least 3 primary sources for what the brand does and doesn't do.

No brand pays to appear. No brand can alter its verdict. See the methodology for the full scoring rubric, or the data sources page for every database we pull from.

What we check

• Third-party certifications — EWG Verified, MADE SAFE, Leaping Bunny, USDA Organic, COSMOS Organic, OEKO-TEX, GOTS, GREENGUARD Gold, Green Seal, EPA Safer Choice, Cradle to Cradle, Clean Label Project, NSF/ANSI 305.
• Flagged ingredients — EWG Skin Deep high-hazard scores and INCI deck screening for parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde releasers, and PFAS markers.
• Public enforcement — FDA warning letters, MoCRA registrations, CPSC recalls, California Prop 65 notices, CourtListener lawsuits.
• Regulatory risk — EPA CompTox + TSCA lookups and relevant state-level actions.

How a brand earns a verdict score

Every brand starts at 50/100. Certifications add weighted points (cap +40). Flagged ingredients subtract up to 40. Enforcement actions subtract up to 30. A small citation-surplus bonus caps at +15. Verdicts are deterministic — see methodology for the exact rubric.

What we don't do

• No sponsored rankings.
• No AI-only reviews — every claim cites a regulatory filing, certifier registry, peer-reviewed study, or court document.
• No verdict below the 3-citation threshold. Brands without sufficient primary-source evidence stay unpublished.
